Dr.
Pearse states that the differ-
viz:-
-onces between the current year and past years are two,
(a).
Absence of anti-flea measures
following the discovery of infected rats.
(b).
A more intense epizootic due to
the larger number of immune rats in consequence of the
great decrease in plague last year.
The explanation of the first of
these two changes is due in his opinion to the following
reasons:-
(1).
The abolition of the rat-catching
staff resulted in fewer rats being caught, and consequently
in fewer cleansings of houses in which plague infected
rats had been found.
(2).
Of the rats caught a much smaller
percentage was returned as infected, because the Acting
Bacteriologist only reported those proved to be infected
and not (as previously had been done) those suspected.
